Kahului Airport (OGG) at a glance

Kahului Airport is the main airport on Maui and sits in the flat isthmus between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakalā. Smaller airfields at Kapalua (JHM) and Hāna (HNM) exist, but most visitors land in Kahului. The airport address is 1 Kahului Airport Road, Kahului, HI 96732, and the information line is (808) 872-3830.

Rental cars are in high demand on Maui, and a car is the easiest way to reach Haleakalā and the Road to Hāna. This guide shows how to get from the terminal to your car, the bus or a transfer, and how long the main drives take.

Rental cars at Kahului Airport

The center, the tram and the points that decide your price.

The rental car center

The center opened on 15 May 2019. An electric tram links the terminal and the center, about half a mile with three stops, and the ride takes roughly 6 minutes there and back. It is free. It was set up to close between 11 pm and 5 am, so check the current hours before a late arrival.

Which companies

The airport lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt and Thrifty. Sixt is reached by phone or web. Smaller local companies may use a shuttle from the terminal instead of a counter at the center, so read the pick-up instructions in your booking.

Fees on your quote

Compare the total price, not the daily rate. Quotes include airport charges such as a daily facility charge, which was $4.50 per day when the center opened in 2019, plus taxes and surcharges. The exact amounts change.

Reserve early

The official Hawaii tourism website advises booking your car early because demand is high. Do it when you book your flight, and check the cancellation terms.

Maui Bus from the airport

Cheap, but only for light packers.

RouteNameService
40Upcountry IslanderAbout every 90 minutes, roughly 6:00 am to 10:11 pm
35Haiku IslanderAbout every 90 minutes, 5:30 am to 9:40 pm

Both routes run daily, including holidays, and stop in front of the terminal. There are no transfers on the airport service. Luggage is limited to one medium suitcase or bag, no larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches, which must fit under the seat or on your lap. That makes the bus a poor fit for a family with big bags. Check the fare and the current timetable with Maui Bus on (808) 871-4838 before you go.

Your first drive on Maui

Kahului is the driest and warmest part of your first day. Highs are around 82°F (28°C) in January and 90°F (32°C) in August, and the airport gets about 16 inches (412 mm) of rain a year. If you drive up Haleakalā you leave that heat behind: the summit at 10,023 feet is about 30°F (17°C) cooler than the coast, and frost is possible all year.

Drive slowly and let local drivers pass. On one-lane bridges give way to oncoming traffic. Fill up in Pāʻia before the Road to Hāna, because it is the last gas station before Hāna. The Haleakalā sunrise needs a $1 reservation per car from 3 to 7 am, plus the $30 park entry.

For the drive to the summit and the park rules, see the Haleakalā guide. Kapalua and Hāna have only small airfields, so for West Maui Kahului is usually the better place to land, about 50 minutes from Kāʻanapali.

A security checkpoint project and a new airport access road are planned or under way, so allow extra time on departure day. During hurricane season, from 1 June to 30 November, check your airline for delays. Storms in August 2026 disrupted flights across the islands.

Kahului Airport (OGG) handles most flights. Smaller airfields at Kapalua (JHM) and Hāna (HNM) also exist.

How do I get from the terminal to the rental car center?

Take the free electric tram. It runs about half a mile between the terminal and the center and takes roughly 6 minutes there and back. The tram was set up to close from 11 pm to 5 am, so check the hours before a late arrival.

Is there a bus from Kahului Airport?

Yes. Maui Bus routes 35 (Haiku Islander) and 40 (Upcountry Islander) stop in front of the terminal. Luggage is limited to one medium bag, so the bus suits light travelers only.
